How to launch a supplement brand online in the UK
Step 1 — Nail the product before the brand
The strongest supplement brands start with a formulation decision, not a logo: who is this for, what format will they actually take daily, and what can the formula legitimately claim? Those three questions shape everything downstream — including what your website will legally be allowed to say. Answering them with a formulation team at the table saves months.
Step 2 — Choose your manufacturer like an investor would
Unit price matters, but the questions that protect you are about quality and capability: is the facility GMP-certified and independently audited (look for credentials like NSF cGMP and BRC grades)? Can they formulate, or only run your recipe? What formats can they produce as you extend the range? A manufacturer that can grow with you beats one that is marginally cheaper on your first SKU.
Step 3 — Clear your claims before you spend on packaging
This is the step founders reorder at their peril. Every claim on your labels, website and ads must map to the UK's authorised register — and if any product strays into treat/cure/prevent territory it legally becomes an unlicensed medicine. Getting claims cleared before you print packaging or brief a designer means you never pay for the same asset twice.
Step 4 — Build a storefront designed for repeat purchase
Supplements are consumed monthly; the economics live in reorder, which is why we build every store on Shopify with subscriptions designed in from the start. The launch checklist that matters: compliant, benefit-led product pages; a subscription offer worth taking; ingredient transparency; trust signals (certifications, manufacturing provenance); and a fast, mobile-first experience — most of your buyers will arrive on a phone.
Step 5 — Launch discoverable, not just live
Being live and being findable are different states. From day one your site should carry the technical layer that search engines and AI assistants read: structured data describing your organisation and products, direct answers to the questions your buyers ask, and explicit access for AI crawlers. Buyers increasingly ask ChatGPT and Google's AI features what to take — the brands those systems can read and verify are the ones they cite.
The sequencing advantage of one roof
Run separately, these steps are sequential and slow — each supplier waiting on the last. Under one roof, formulation, manufacturing, claims clearance and the website build run in parallel: the site is built while the first production run is made, using claims already cleared by the people who formulated the product. That is the launch model Formula Works exists to offer.
