How AI assistants decide which supplement brands to recommend
The new shelf
When a buyer asks an AI assistant "what should I take for tiredness?" or "best UK supplement brand for gut health", the answer is a shortlist assembled from what the system can read and trust. That shortlist is the new shelf placement — and unlike a supermarket shelf, you cannot buy your way onto it. You engineer and earn your way on.
First, the machine has to be able to read you
AI search crawlers read HTML. If your product content only exists after JavaScript runs, or your robots.txt blocks the crawlers that feed AI search (OpenAI's search bot, Anthropic's, Perplexity's), you are invisible regardless of how good the brand is. The first audit step is always the same: is the real content in the source, and are the crawlers allowed in?
Second, it has to understand what you are
Ambiguity kills citations. Structured data — organisation, products, services, FAQs — tells the machine exactly who you are, what you sell and what your pages answer, in the vocabulary machines share. Consistent name, address and contact details across your site and profiles corroborate it. An AI system will not stake a recommendation on an entity it cannot pin down.
Third, it has to find something worth quoting
AI answers are assembled from direct, factual, self-contained statements — which is why question-formatted content with honest answers gets lifted, and pages of adjectives do not. A supplement brand that plainly explains what its formula contains, what it can legitimately claim and what it costs gives an assistant something quotable. Hype gives it nothing to work with.
What nobody can promise you
No agency can guarantee ChatGPT will recommend your brand — the systems change, and their retrieval is not for sale. What can be guaranteed is eligibility: readable pages, unambiguous entities, welcomed crawlers, quotable answers, and corroboration beyond your own website. Most supplement sites fail several of these at once, which is precisely why doing all of them is an edge.
